Thermal waters in Bergamo province. Ideal for treatments, wellness and leisure time
Almost everywhere the presence of ancient thermal springs is marked by traces of use by the Romans. The Romans, who were highly skilled in building aqueducts and spas, were also very aware of the beneficial effect of the water from particular springs and created baths and pools for their own use.
Trescore Balneario and the Cavallina Valley
It is for this reason we can suppose, and tradition has it, that the Romans knew about the springs that bubble to the surface in the area where the town of Trescore Balneario later developed. Furthermore, the Cavallina Valley, of which Trescore is one of the most important towns, was crossed since ancient times by a road that linked the Sebino (Lake Iseo) and the Camonica Valley with Bergamo. This route was transformed in Roman times into an important connecting road, which could also have favoured the development of these springs.

San Pellegrino Terme
Less historically significant, but certainly no less popular and important, are the thermal springs of San Pellegrino Terme, in the Brembana Valley. As far as we can determine, these springs have been known since the Middle Ages by the inhabitants of the valley, who used the waters for their properties, in particular to treat hyperuricaemia and kidney stones, but their fame spread when several doctors began recommending their use to patients who lived in the city. In spite of the poor state of the road, people in the nineteenth century travelled from Bergamo to San Pellegrino by horse and carriage. The journey was uncomfortable and tiring, but the effectiveness of the waters was such that a growing number of people were willing to face the discomfort in order to be healed.

Liberty style
It was the foresight of several businessmen who, with their project to make use of the waters, transformed the small Brembana Valley village into a spa town. San Pellegrino’s history is clearly visible in the architecture of the resort, which between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the last century became filled with elegant Art Nouveau buildings, a style that spread throughout Europe and marked an unrepeatable era. Some of the most architecturally important buildings in San Pellegrino include the Spa buildings, the Municipal Casino and the imposing Grand Hotel.

Sant'Omobono
Another thermal spa resort in the Bergamo area, which over the past few years has seen increasing numbers of visitors, is Sant’Omobono in the Imagna Valley. The effects of a sulphureous spring that bubbled from a bed of rock were already known in the eighteenth century and used by the mountain dwellers to cure, in particular, skin diseases. It was also due to this spa and the pleasant climate that Sant’Omobono Imagna developed as a summer tourist resort during the first half of the last century. The building housing Villa Ortensie and the modern spa were built at this time as the ideal place for treatments and wellness holidays.
